Dear Wiki Friends, Have you heard the term "Living Learning Communities" used while in college, at your current institution, heard a family member speak about an LLC, or have seen the term while reading? Well, I would like to take the time to introduce you to the world of LLCs and the importance of LLCs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Living Learning Communities are models that have been employed by many higher education institutions to increase retention, student engagement, leadership and community building. Various scholars have entered the conversation on the educational and operational effectiveness of HBCUs. While institutions of higher education serve the same purpose and goal, to educate students, it’s a different world at HBCUs in comparison to PWIs. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are institutions of higher education that were established in the 1800’s for the purpose of serving the African-American Community. They were created to give African-Americans equal educational opportunities. While building upon the legacy of so many prestigious HBCUs, it's critical to explore the retention and graduation rates of our students. With this in mind, Living Learning Communities have been established at many HBCUs to foster more inclusive communities. Dawkins (2006) suggested that by 2011, 30 percent of HBCUs will implement learning communities on their campuses. Furthermore, limited research has discussed the LLC experience and outcomes at HBCUs. My hope is that this blog will help viewers build awareness around the importance of LLCs existing on HBCU campuses. Let's explore the challenges, barriers, accomplishments and success of LLCs at HBCUs.

I would like to have an open dialogue about:

1. Examining the “what factor”, what is takes to start an LLC at an HBCU-The benefit of LLCs at HBCUs? What has been your observation?

2. Explore how LLC's on HBCU campuses integrate curricular and co-curricular experiences that complement and extend classroom learning.

3. Engage and enhance viewers understanding of what it takes to support successful LLC programs at HBCUs.
